Did you know your car has a "black box" recorder?
It's not quite
the magic box that searchers are looking for when a plane goes down, but
your insurance company is interested!
The box is constantly recording the last five seconds before
impact. It is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR), and it’s less
full-time spy, more an extremely nosy emergency witness.
In most modern vehicles, it saves a short snapshot right before,
during and sometimes right after a crash-triggering event, like sudden
deceleration or airbag deployment. That data can include speed, braking,
throttle position, steering input, seat belt use and crash force.
It’s not your whole driving life, just the juicy five seconds your
insurance company suddenly cares very deeply about.
